Racism is Alive in Well in Housing Policy

Why Do Politicians Want to Take Away Homeownership from Communities of Color?

LA Progressive

In California, politicians and developers are attacking single-family home zoning. Yet they suspiciously ignore that homeownership is a crucial tool for communities of color to build wealth. Politicians should not take that away by banning single-family zoning: people of color will suffer serious consequences….

…Politicians and developers say that by building more pricey, market-rate apartments, eventually rent prices will drop with the increase of more rental housing. Therefore, they say, government must loosen land-use zoning that prevents developers from building more apartments. The argument is flawed and self-serving.

“Save Our Seniors (SOS) is an all-volunteer network of individuals and organizations that is working to secure the continuation of bilingual and bi-cultural care and services for seniors residing at the facilities formerly known as Keiro Nursing and Retirement homes, a Japanese American institution for nearly fifty years. To this day, due to inequalities in the U.S. public health system, no other such facilities exist. Because of this context, the lives of the remaining residents are endangered by the profit objectives of the owners of these facilities.”

PANA members have been playing a key role in this fight as members of the SOS Network. PANA members have helped to organize and mobilize for mass events, assisted with social media promotion and are working to win support for AB 279, which would help stop evicitions of seniors during the pandemic.  PANA views this fight at part of the larger effort to win equality in healthcare and to win Medicare-for-All in CA, such as by winning AB 1400.

Services Not Sweeps!

Services Not Sweeps

PANA is a member of the Services Not Sweeps Coalition in Los Angeles. We oppose the unofficial policy of the current Los Angeles City to choose criminalization of our unhoused neighbors by deployment of City Department of Sanitation personnel backed by the Los Angeles Police Department to confiscate and destroy homeless peoples’ personal property in service of Wall Street Developers and heartless “Not-In-My-Back-Yard (NIMBY)” homeowners.

Demand Housekeys Not Handcuffs

We demand that City Council and the Mayor’s office instead invest their time and legislative power into programs that actually help us move forward in providing a healthy and safe living environments for our unhoused communities while they are on the streets, and take concrete action steps in providing transitional/permanent housing opportunities that meet a higher standard of living than current shelter and “Bridge Home” facilities offer.
